So the Bruins didn’t exactly take violent revenge against the Penguins at all last week. Sean Thornton momentarily displayed the type of passion and team respect that the Bruins have been lacking as he straight pummeled Matt Cooke, but the rest of the team played a pretty lackluster game.
After that, the Bruins showed some signs of life, by playing hard and winning in regulation at home (a rarity this season) against the Rangers. This is the same Rangers team that has been nipping at the Bruins’ heels for the number 8 spot.
With this victory, they have distanced themselves from the Rangers, but another unlikely foe has quickly filled the void left behind by the Rangers. This foe is the Atlanta Thrashers, without their offensive mastermind Ilia Kovulchuck (traded to NJ).
Ironically, the Bruins take on the Thrashers tonight, in Atlanta. With the Thrashers trailing by a single point in the standings, one would normally rather have a game of such importance be at home, but the Bruins’ record this year almost makes me rather they play all their games away from the Garden.
A win tonight will not only give the Bruin’s some breathing room (although not much), but it will also pull them within striking distance of the 5th, 6th, or 7th seed in the east. If they’re going to turn it on this season, now is the time.
Standings as it is now:
- 5th Ottowa – 81 points
- 6th Philly – 79 points
- 7th Montreal – 79 points
- 8th Boston – 76 points
- 9th Atlanta – 75 points
- 10th NY – 71 points
